| 1884 John Slemans Blackburn settles in the area now called Laurel. Blackburn Point, Blackburn Road and Blackburn Bay were also named for early settlers. John Slemans Backburn, who arrived in the fall of 1881 with his wife and son, filed claim to 188 bayfront acres for $35.20. His son, Benjamin, decided on an 80-acre homestead 1.5 miles from his father’s property, filing for $12. |
